The MUGOO FAQ

Q: Why are there no questions or answers here?

A: But there are! (This used to be funny when it was the only answer...)

Q: How do I block ads in my browser?

A: (Neil) If you use the Mozilla 1.0 browser (which I would recommend):

http://www.mozilla.org/

it is easy to block ads on web pages. If you need to use banking sites like CIBC, keep Internet Exploder handy, because the CIBC site does not work with Mozilla yet (they have promised to update it). Using Mozilla 1.0 to block ads:

1) browse to page with offending ads

2) hover the pointer hand over the ad graphic - the URL display window at the bottom will show something like:
<http://ads.weather.ca/adclick/CID=0000069d4f7209c400000000/
SITE=twn/pageid=40225261/AREA=can/AAMSZ=120X600/
SECTOR=sont.on/CITY=ottawa_ON/acc_random=74244942>

3) this tells you that the ads are coming from a server called "ads.weather.ca"

4) control-click on the ad and in the pop-down list choose "Block images from this server"

5) the next time you come back to that page you won't see the ads To look at your list of blocked sites choose TOOLS > IMAGE MANAGER > MANAGE IMAGE PERMISSIONS.

Q: Where does Apple hide the specifications for older Macs? I need to find out what kind of hard drive mine has.

A: (Neil) Apple keeps moving these pages around on their website, but the last time I looked, these were active:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html

http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.legacy/index.html

Q: Under OS 9.2, I have a strange 1.5 minute delay BEFORE the password is requested into Keychain during the system startup process. The clock does not run (I have seconds on ), the cursor moves, but I can not select anything. After about 1.5 minutes the Clock jumps to the right time and shows the changing seconds, the cursor can now select an item in the finder, and every thing seems normal. What is going on?

A1: (Neil) It sounds like the machine has TCP/IP set to DHCP and it cannot find a DHCP server to give it an IP number. The system usually "hangs" trying to get DHCP data and then it gives up and uses a default IP number. This is most common in Airport or cable router based networks.

A2: (David Searle) I used to have glacial internet response. It turns out that the problem had to do with some spurious information left over in my TCP/IP control panel from before Rogers went over to active DHCP. Specifically, there were still some IP addresses in the Name Server Addr: Solution, delete them. Response jumped immediately.

A3: (Bill Taylor) I had a similar problem with a simple network setup between my G3 and an Imac using a cross-over ethernet cable. Apple told me the startup delay was caused by the system trying to establish a network connection. Perhaps you should upgrade your OS. I think I got around this problem by upgrading to OS 9.2.2.

Q: Why does the MUGOO-talk robot refuse my mail? I am not sending an attachment but it claims I am.

A: (Neil) To prevent virus transmission, the MUGOO-talk robot refuses to accept postings with attachments. The Apple Mail client and all Microsoft mail clients are set to send HTML-encoded mail by default. The HTML looks like an attachment to the robot.

To send mail to MUGOO-talk, you must turn off HTML-encoding. Besides that, sending an attachment via MUGOO-talk means that EVERYBODY gets it whether they want it or not (and most people don't!)

To forward an attachment to someone on the list, just use the recipient's address instead of MUGOO-talk's address.

Q: I am try to trash some application in OS X. I am told that I do not have "privileges" to empty the trash. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

A: If you are REALLY sure you want to delete the files, try BatChmod. A few words from the description:

BatChmod is a new Cocoa utility from Renaud Boisjoly for manipulating file and folder privileges in Mac OS X (10.1 recommended). It allows the manipulation of ownership as well as the privileges associated to the Owner, Group or others.

Oh, and it can Force Empty the Trash for you! It is freeware.

Q: I am trying to connect my two computers via a wireless network. One is using OS9 (with two partitions) and the other OSX. From OSX I can connect to the OS9 computer using the "connect to server" command in finder. Once I have logged on I am presented with a dialogue box asking which volume I want to mount but there are no volumes to choose from. What do I do next?

A: (John Day) Make sure you have turned on file sharing in the other computer. In the File Sharing control panel, on the start/stop tab, check enable file sharing over TCP/IP. Once that is on, you can go back to Connect to Server on the other. If it doesn't show up, you can try typing the IP address of the OS9 computer. Try afp://IP address (where IP address is the address of the other computer). If the OSX computer asks you for your password, you should be in business. If you want to connect back to the OSX computer form the OS9, turn your file sharing on in System Prefs.
